The 4th of July is a great time to barbecue with friends & family and you don’t have to break your wallet entertaining. Make entertaining fun and simple while including your guests in the festivities by trying some of these ideas.

- Have a potluck with a theme to share the costs. Red, white and blue is always a festive theme. Firecracker foods with spice or a salad and casserole motif might be nice.

- If you don’t want the hassle of entertaining at your house, take advantage of the local parks and waterways in our area that provide picnic facilities.

- Stock up on everything you need; decorations, plates, napkin, games, etc. at The Dollar Store. You can impress your guests without spending a bundle.

- Keep an eye on the local grocery ads. If you missed them in Wednesday’s paper you can catch them online or pick up a copy inside the store.

- Make a budget and stick to it.

- Prepare a list before you set out shopping and go online to find coupons for the items you plan on buying. Some of my favorite coupon sites are www.redplum.com and www.coupons.com.

If you don’t feel like entertaining but want to be part of the Independence Day celebration, check out Chico Area Recreation and Park District’s 46th annual 4th of July Celebration here. They will have everything from the good old fashion pancake breakfast and pie eating contest to a 5k run, games and prizes.

However you decide to celebrate our country’s birthday, be sure to take a moment and remember how lucky we are to live in this great country and enjoy the rights and freedom of life, liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
